Sample itemA survey wants to assess immunisation status in a large district where a complete list of children is unavailable. Which sampling method is the most practical?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
C. Cluster sampling
Cluster sampling selects groups, such as villages or wards, at random, then surveys individuals within them. It does not need a full sampling frame of individuals and reduces travel, as in standard immunisation coverage surveys, although the design effect increases the sample size needed.
Option by option
A. Simple random sampling
Simple random sampling requires a complete list of all children.
B. Systematic sampling from a register
Systematic sampling also needs a sampling frame such as a register.
C. Cluster sampling (correct)
Correct. It needs only a list of clusters, not of all individuals.
D. Quota sampling
Quota sampling is non-random and introduces selection bias.
