Forensic Medicine · Toxicology: sampling in drug-facilitated assault
Sample itemA woman reports amnesia and suspected sexual assault after an evening at a party, and a drug-facilitated assault is suspected. Why should a urine sample be collected as early as possible?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
D. Many such agents are cleared quickly and soon become undetectable
Agents used in drug-facilitated assault, such as gamma-hydroxybutyrate and short-acting benzodiazepines, are eliminated quickly. They may be undetectable within hours to a day or two, so urine and blood should be collected at the first contact, with consent and a proper chain of custody. Delay cannot be avoided in some cases, but the sample should still be taken.
Option by option
A. Urine concentrates the drug more after a day and causes false positives
Concentration over time does not produce false positives, and levels fall.
B. A late sample is inadmissible whatever the result
A late sample can still be admissible, but a negative result is less informative.
C. The preservative works only in the first few hours
Preservatives act over a long period and do not have a short window.
D. Many such agents are cleared quickly and soon become undetectable (correct)
Correct. Rapid elimination narrows the window in which the drug can be found.
