Sample item

A block has 5,000 eligible couples. All of the following are current users of approved methods: 1,000 sterilised, 400 with IUCD, 300 using condoms and 200 using oral pills. What is the couple protection rate?

Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.

The answer and the reasoning

B. 38 percent

The couple protection rate is the number of effectively protected couples divided by eligible couples. Here 1,000 plus 400 plus 300 plus 200 is 1,900, and 1,900 divided by 5,000 is 38 percent.

Option by option

  • A. 18 percent

This counts only the users of IUCD, condoms and pills (900 couples) and leaves out the sterilised couples.

  • B. 38 percent (correct)

Correct. 1,900 protected couples among 5,000 eligible is 38 percent.

  • C. 28 percent

This counts only sterilisation and IUCD users (1,400 couples).

  • D. 20 percent

This counts only the sterilised couples (1,000).
