Sample itemAccording to Parks classification of anal fistulae, which type is the commonest?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Intersphincteric
Intersphincteric fistulae run between the internal and external sphincters and account for about 45 to 70 percent of cases, and they are simple to treat with fistulotomy. Transsphincteric fistulae cross the external sphincter and are the next commonest. Suprasphincteric and extrasphincteric types are rare and difficult.
