Anaesthesia · Critical care, resuscitation, and emergency principles: curriculum recognition
Sample itemWhich urine output criterion contributes to the KDIGO definition of acute kidney injury in a critically ill adult?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Less than 0.5 mL/kg/h for 6 hours or more
KDIGO defines acute kidney injury by a creatinine rise of 0.3 mg/dL within 48 hours, a rise of at least 1.5 times baseline within 7 days, or a urine output below 0.5 mL/kg/h for 6 hours. A single hour of low output is too short and is common during anaesthesia.
Option by option
A. Less than 0.5 mL/kg/h for 6 hours or more (correct)
Correct. Sustained oliguria for 6 hours meets the urine criterion.
B. Less than 2 mL/kg/h for 12 hours
A threshold of 2 mL/kg/h is far above the oliguria range.
C. Less than 0.5 mL/kg/h for 1 hour
One hour of low output is too brief to define injury.
D. Less than 1 mL/kg/h for 6 hours
A threshold of 1 mL/kg/h is higher than the KDIGO value.
