Anaesthesia · Critical care, resuscitation, and emergency principles: curriculum recognition
Sample itemA haemodynamically stable ventilated patient with a functioning gut needs nutritional support. Which approach is recommended?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
C. Early enteral feeding within 24 to 48 hours
Enteral feeding started early is preferred over parenteral nutrition because it preserves gut mucosal integrity and carries fewer infective complications. Parenteral nutrition is added only if enteral feeding is not possible or insufficient.
Option by option
A. Intravenous dextrose alone for 5 days
Dextrose alone gives inadequate nutrition and protein.
B. Delay all feeding until day 7
Prolonged starvation leads to catabolism and a worse outcome.
C. Early enteral feeding within 24 to 48 hours (correct)
Correct. Early enteral feeding is the recommended route.
D. Total parenteral nutrition from day one
Parenteral nutrition from day one carries more infections and is not first choice.
