ENT · Pharynx and tonsils: Friedman tongue position
Sample itemA patient with obstructive sleep apnoea is examined, and the surgeon grades how much of the uvula and tonsils are visible with the tongue in a neutral position and mouth open. Which staging system is this?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Friedman tongue position
Friedman tongue position grades the oropharyngeal view from I (uvula and pillars visible) to IV (only hard palate visible) and, with tonsil size and BMI, predicts the success of palatal surgery. The Mallampati grade is similar, but it is taken with protruded tongue. It helps choose surgical candidates.
Option by option
A. Friedman tongue position (correct)

B. House-Brackmann grading

C. Cormack-Lehane grading

D. Chandler classification
