Sample itemWhich structure is derived from the second pharyngeal arch?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Stapes, styloid process and the facial muscles
The second (hyoid) arch cartilage of Reichert gives the stapes (except the footplate), styloid process, stylohyoid ligament and the lesser horn and upper body of the hyoid, and its muscles are the facial muscles supplied by the facial nerve. The first arch gives the malleus and incus. The thyroid cartilage is from the fourth arch.
