ENT · Head and neck tumours: Mendelsohn manoeuvre
Sample itemA speech therapist teaches a post-stroke patient to hold the larynx elevated for a few seconds at the middle of a swallow, to prolong cricopharyngeal opening. What is this technique?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
C. Mendelsohn manoeuvre
The Mendelsohn manoeuvre consciously prolongs laryngeal elevation during swallowing, which widens and lengthens opening of the upper oesophageal sphincter and improves bolus clearance. It is used in patients with reduced laryngeal elevation. The supraglottic swallow is another airway protective technique.
Option by option
A. Valsalva manoeuvre
The Valsalva manoeuvre raises intrathoracic pressure.
B. Heimlich manoeuvre
The Heimlich manoeuvre treats choking.
C. Mendelsohn manoeuvre (correct)
Correct. It prolongs upper oesophageal sphincter opening.
D. Epley manoeuvre
The Epley manoeuvre treats posterior canal BPPV.
