OBG · Puerperium: home-based postnatal care
Sample itemUnder the national home-based newborn and postpartum care schedule, for a mother who delivered in an institution, on which days does the ASHA make home visits?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
B. Days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42
For institutional deliveries, the ASHA makes six home visits on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42 after birth, and for home deliveries an additional visit on day 1 is made. During the visits she checks the newborn for danger signs, supports breastfeeding and cord care, and identifies maternal complications such as bleeding, fever or hypertension. Referral is arranged when danger signs are found.
Option by option
A. Days 10 and 30 only
These dates do not match the schedule.
B. Days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42 (correct)
Correct. The schedule for institutional births is days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42.
C. Days 1, 2 and 3 only
Three early visits only is not the schedule.
D. Days 7 and 28 only
Two visits are insufficient under the programme.
