ENT · Neck: nodes of Rouviere
Sample itemA patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a retropharyngeal lymph node on MRI. Which node is the first echelon station for the nasopharynx in this region?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
C. Lateral retropharyngeal node of Rouviere
The lateral retropharyngeal nodes (Rouviere) lie at the level of the first two cervical vertebrae and drain the nasopharynx, posterior nasal cavity and eustachian tube. They are often involved early in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and are not palpable, so imaging is needed.
Option by option
A. Submental node
Submental nodes drain the chin and floor of mouth.
B. Prelaryngeal node
Prelaryngeal nodes drain the anterior subglottis and thyroid.
C. Lateral retropharyngeal node of Rouviere (correct)
Correct. Rouviere's node is the first-station retropharyngeal node.
D. Level VI paratracheal node
Paratracheal nodes drain the subglottis, thyroid and cervical oesophagus.
