Orthopaedics · Spine: spinal shock
Sample itemWhich finding signals the end of spinal shock after a cord injury?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Return of the bulbocavernosus reflex
Spinal shock is temporary loss of all reflex activity below the level of cord injury, with flaccid paralysis and areflexia. The earliest sign of its resolution is return of the bulbocavernosus reflex, usually within 24 to 48 hours. After this, residual deficits define the injury completeness.

Priapism can occur during shock and is not a sign of its end.
C. Return of voluntary movement
