Pediatrics · Immunisation: rotavirus vaccine contraindication
Sample itemWhich infant should NOT receive the oral rotavirus vaccine?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
C. An infant with a history of intussusception
A previous intussusception contraindicates the oral rotavirus vaccine because of a small excess risk of intussusception with it. Severe combined immunodeficiency is another contraindication. Minor illness, prematurity and HIV exposure are not.
Option by option
A. An infant born at 34 weeks and clinically stable
Stable preterm infants may be vaccinated.
B. An infant with a mild cold
A mild cold is a minor illness and not a contraindication.
C. An infant with a history of intussusception (correct)
Correct. Prior intussusception is a contraindication to the vaccine.
D. An asymptomatic HIV-exposed infant
Asymptomatic HIV-exposed infants may be vaccinated.
