Anaesthesia · Monitoring and anaesthesia workstation: curriculum recognition
Sample itemA pressure-sensitive component of an anaesthesia machine sounds an alarm and cuts off nitrous oxide when the supply of the vital gas drops. What is this component?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
B. Oxygen supply failure protection device
The oxygen supply failure protection device senses falling oxygen supply pressure, gives an audible warning and cuts off or reduces nitrous oxide and other gases. It stops a hypoxic mixture being delivered when the oxygen source fails. It is separate from the pin index system, which prevents cylinder misconnection.
Option by option
A. Pressure-relief (pop-off) valve
A pop-off valve vents excess pressure from the circuit; it does not respond to supply failure.
B. Oxygen supply failure protection device (correct)
Correct. It alarms and shuts off nitrous oxide when oxygen supply pressure falls.
C. Pin index safety system
The pin index safety system prevents a cylinder being fitted to the wrong yoke.
D. Oxygen flush valve
The flush valve delivers a high flow of oxygen on demand and has no alarm function.
