OBG · Infertility: tubal assessment
Sample itemWhich investigation is the gold standard for assessing tubal patency and pelvic pathology?
Original practice item, not a recalled exam question. Nothing here is recorded.
The answer and the reasoning
A. Laparoscopy with chromopertubation
Laparoscopy with dye test directly visualises the tubes, ovaries, peritoneal disease and spill of dye. HSG is the first-line screening test because it is less invasive. Laparoscopy is reserved for suspected endometriosis or adhesions.
Option by option
A. Laparoscopy with chromopertubation (correct)
Correct. It is the gold standard but invasive.
B. Sonosalpingography
Sonosalpingography is a screening alternative.
C. Pelvic ultrasound
Plain ultrasound does not show tubal patency.
D. Hysterosalpingography
HSG is the usual first-line test, not the gold standard.
